Foot Type: Neutral, Overpronator
August 2016 Update: We now recommend the newer model in the line, the ASICS Gel-Kayano 21. It provides even more cushioning and support than the Gel-Kayano 20. Read our detailed review of the ASICS Gel-Kayano 21 below for more information!
Detailed Review: ASICS Gel-Kayano 21 for Women
Named after the person who designed it, the Kayano 21 is by far the softest running shoes with superior cushioning and comfort, by ASICS. It’s much softer than the Kayano 20 and the Gel Nimbus 16, making it an excellent shoe for overpronators and runners suffering from plantar fasciitis and heel pain, reducing further harm to their feet and promoting effective gait.
There is a substantial amount of ASICS’ gel in the sole, allowing great shock absorption. In addition, the treads at the bottom are made with hardened foam and come in a curved line. This allows for improve heel striking, smoothening your running and providing a generous amount of overall support.
Cushioning, Shock Absorption & Comfort
The bottom of the shoe is constructed like a tank with its signature FluidRide midsole that provides great cushioning and bounce-back. The bounce back has been increased by 20% since the previous model and the weight of the midsole has been reduced by 15%, giving you immense support with very little weight on your feet.
Cushioning & Support systems
The outsole is made of Asics High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR) which provides substantial cushioning and durability. What’s new about the outsole is the crash pad at the rarefoot, which is designed for overpronators, providing high support especially for those with plantar fasciitis.
Quality & Price
The shoe provides great stability and is built with the Dynamic DuoMax support system. DuoMax is the support technology currently provided by Asics in its line of shoes. The system comes in most stability shoes manufactured by Asics and is perfect for women who overpronate while running or have heel pain.
The price tag may be a drawback for some but the Kayano 21 is a superb model for overpronators and women with flat feet. The shoe is fit for beginners as well and even runners without plantar fasciitis. It provides exceptional support and stability and has a great bounce back thanks to the Asics’gel.
As mentioned earlier, the shoe is compatible for overpronators, flat feet and women suffering from plantar fasciitis or heel pain. However, the shoes work well for those without any foot-related issues as well.
You may notice that the fit is not the same as the previous model due to the addition of lining for greater support. There is a soft layer of fabric in the inner shoe which can make the shoe slightly tight for some. Therefore, you may have to get a width up or half size bigger.
Customers’ Reviews and Conclusion
With over 1700 reviews on Amazon, you’ll find that 95% of the positive feedbacks are about the improved cushioning, support and shock absorbency. Many women report that the shoes are not only great for runners, but also for shoppers, nurses, doctors and teachers. One reviewer reports that her heel pain reduced by 80 to 90% with these shoes and another loves the toe box as the previous ones gave purple toe nails.
Most negative reviews are regarding the fit, due to which it’s highly recommended that you get half size up even if you’ve used Asics before. The increased lining can make the shoe a bit tight so while some people don’t seem to mind it, others find it a huge downside.
